VIDEOLOGIC
APOCALYPSE 3Dx
Pros:
Low cost , allows high-resolution 3D acceleration w/Z-buffer , PowerSGL (native) games look real good.
Cons:
Not as fast as newer 3D acclerators , CPU dependent.
Rating:
7/10

The Apocalypse 3Dx is based on NEC's so called Voodoo killer , the PowerVR2. This powerful chipset is equipped with 4 megabytes of high speed SDRAM , all dedicated to texture memory. (The Z-buffer values are stored on chip) This Onchip Z-buffer allows the powerVR2 to run Z-buffered games at resolutions of up to 1024x768! This is one of the reasons gamers prefer this card over the Voodoo chipset based ones. The Apocalypse 3Dx's speed isn't quite up to par with the Voodoo , however when used in a fast machine , the gap narrows down significantly. Because of the Apocalypse's CPU dependency , it should not be used with CPU's slower than a 166w/MMX. (Also , don't use it with a Cyrix chip) Another advantage the Apocalypse has over the Monster 3D is the price. This card can be had for about 99$ , or even less , compared to the 150$ minimum which you can buy a Monster 3D. All in all , the Apocalypse 3Dx is a decent addition to a fast system , however many of the newer chipsets are slowly putting this card away. Maybe the new PMX (Highlander) will change this.
